I have been working on steps 7 & 8 of the "Easy Street" mystery.  Both clues came out within a couple days of each other, so I don't remember which parts belong to which clues, but I'll show you what I've go accomplished so far, anyway.

These are the 4 corner blocks that will be the corners of the quilt:

Because the blocks in this quilt are "on-point", you need half-blocks to finish out the rows.  Here are the half-blocks I have made so far:

I have five made so far...I need a total of 12.  I don't know if it's just me, or what...but these seem to be going together VERY slowly for me.  :(   I lay out the pieces for 3 half-blocks at a time and then sew them together row by row.   Since I have about 5 fabrics of each color, I'm trying to keep from having too many of the same fabrics in the same area.

Does anybody have any ideas how to speed up the process?   I'm open to suggestions as to how you are putting yours together and keeping it scrappy.

And this isn't even a DENT in the making of the actual quilt blocks!  I'm beginning to feel very overwhelmed and am losing interest.  UGH!  :(

Onto another subject...

Yesterday, I did some couponing at Walgreen's and this is what I got...

I got $39.67 worth of product for $8.23 out-of-pocket, but got $13.00 back in Register Rewards, making this a $4.77 moneymaker!

I know, I know...why am I buying prenatal vitamins and infants Advil when I'm not pregnant and don't have a baby???   Because I know someone who IS pregnant.  

Yep...that's right, Folks...we're gonna be grandparents again!  Our daughter-in-law, Trinity, is pregnant!  :)  She is due this July so these items will be passed along to her!  :)   (I think I'll save that REDLINE energy shot and give it to my son AFTER the baby is born!  LOL  He'll be needing it!  As much as the new mother will NEED it, she won't be able to have it because of the caffeine!) 

And here's one last thing...

I've told you in previous posts how much Ginger loves playing with her bed.  The other night she was spinning around in circles with it in her mouth.  She stopped when I tried to get a video of it, but I did get one of her shaking it back and forth.  (BTW, the orange/red thing you see in the video is NOT blood...it is the price sticker on the bed's tag.)

So from there, let's segue into today's blog post...

For Christmas of 1996, Andy bought me a pair of Ugg slippers that were very expensive.  I had never heard of the brand before, but he had heard them advertised on Rush Limbaugh's radio show...and if they were good enough for his friend, Rush, then they were good enough for Andy.  Or in this case...Andy's wife!  :)   (I once sent an email to Rush saying he needed to advertise 3 carat diamond tennis bracelets [in the hopes that Andy would buy me one based on Rush's recommendation!]  LOL)

Anyway...though those Uggs were expensive (they were around $85 at that time and can run upwards of $100/pair now) they have lasted me for 16 long years and have served me well.  That is...until this winter. 

Here's my old, tired pair that has kept my feet warm for so many winters...

You can see how matted the sheepskin is inside from years of wear.  But the worst part???

Yep...I had a blow-out on the right back seam.  :(    So I've been looking for a nice, durable pair to replace them and on "cyber Monday" I found some and ordered them.  


They arrived yesterday and all I can say is that I am in LURVE!!!  :)

The are "Lamo" brand and are made from Australian sheepskin, just like the Uggs.  These can run between $55-80/pair, but on "cyber Monday" I was able to get them for $37 with free shipping both ways (in case I needed to return them.)  Which I won't (be returning them) because they fit and are ooohhhh soooooo comfortable and warm!  :)

Yeah...Momma's happy now!  :)



And...while we're on the subject of saving money...
I haven't done a couponing post for a while, so I thought I'd show you what I was able to pick up today at Walgreen's...

...before coupons and Register Rewards:  $53.59,  after:  $2.63 cash out-of-pocket!!!!  AND I got $4.50 back in Register Rewards! :  :)

I love it when a plan comes together!   (Extra points if you can tell me who made that saying  popular in the 1980's!)

I've blogged on here before about my chronic arthritic back pain that I've been living with/suffering from for almost 2 years now.

Well...I have an update with some good news!!!

On Friday (2 days ago), I had an epidural injection for pain control.  Leading up to the procedure, I tried not to get my hopes up too high and expect any miracles.  

On Saturday the pain wasn't too bad, but there was still pain.  However, it was not severe enough to keep me from being a whirling dervish when it came to cleaning  the house and preparing for an upcoming trip.  I was able to get a great amount of work done (a great amount for me, anyway, considering that I have spent the last 1 3/4 years only able to do the barest minimum of housework because of the pain.)

This morning when I woke up I noticed that I didn't have any pain.  I've gone shopping today (something that has KILLED my back in the past) and I have only had a rare twinge of pain every now and then.  

Right now...today...I have about 97% pain relief from my normal levels of pain!!!  How exciting is that?  All from a procedure that took about 1 minute to perform.  Heck...getting me positioned and applying the antiseptic took longer than the actual procedure!  :)

I feel like a "normal" member of society again!  :O   Instead of having "pain" when I do something, I will sometimes get a sensation of "tightness" or "pulling" in the area that would have hurt from the same motion just a few short days ago.  

I thank God for Dr. Mahmood, my pain management doctor!  What a blessing his skill and knowledge is for people like myself dealing with chronic pain!!

I have also started doing some simple yoga for arthritis, so I'll keep that up and see if we can't extend the intervals between future injections, too!  :)


I haven't done any couponing since late December.  (I find that I don't like to deal with it during the winter months...weather and all, ya know.)  Since December we have been using from the stash of supplies, toiletries, etc., that I had built-up.  About 2 weeks ago, I resumed my couponing again, although for now I'm only going to Walgreens since Rite Aid hasn't had any really fantastic deals the last couple of weeks.  Today I went to Walgreens and got some great deals that I thought I'd share with you.

Missing from the picture is the Sunday paper that I picked up there, too.  After coupons, I spent $20.18 out of pocket and got $15 back in Register Rewards, making the net cost $5.18 for all of the above items!  Not too shabby!  You'd spend more than that at the dollar store!

Sunday Couponing...

This morning when I was getting my coupons and lists ready to go shopping, my printer decided that it was no longer going to respond to the commands of the computer.  I tried re-installing the software for the printer, but to no avail.  :(  

Luckily, everything is still under warranty and so a call to Dell technical service and 1.5 hours online with a really nice lady from India...and the printer is back up and working just fine!  

I love how they can do a remote access to your computer and do everything themselves!  How many of you remember the "olden" days...before remote access...when the technician would say, "okay, now left click the start button...now open the program...do you see a the word "file" at the top of the page...left-click on that..."  That was soooooooo frustrating because they never believed you when you said you had done what they had told you to do but you still weren't getting the desired results.  :(  And if you had to call multiple times for the same issue, you had to redo the first 15 steps EACH time.  "Yes, we tried that before...and it didn't work then, either."  GRRRR...it was so frustrating!  But now...BAM...you establish a connection with them and let THEM deal with it!  Soooooooooo much better!!!!

So now the printer is back working just fine...taking orders from the computer and printing out the way it should!  :)  

Last Sunday was the Christmas party for the Recovery Room dept.  I had someone take the group picture for me...the first one was good but very blurry...so I'm stuck showing you the not-so-good-but-not-blurry one...

That would be me, second from the right in the front row...with my eyes closed.  :(  And just to be clear...that little girl on the far left is NOT an employee...she is the daughter of the lady in red to her left.  We may be desperate for help sometimes, but we haven't resorted to child labor, yet!  :)

If you look closely, in front of the second person from the left, front row, is an "orb".  (The white round thing down close to her feet.) 


I've labeled it in this picture...

If you've ever watched "Long Island Medium", you'll know that an "orb" is supposed to be the spirit presence of a deceased person.  I've seen her show pictures on her show and this is exactly what they look like.  She says it is NOT just something on the lens.   It is not present in the other picture that was blurry...I went back and checked.  I had heard this about orbs in pictures before watching that show, too.   Hmmm...just makes you wonder.  Who's to say for sure?  I know that I certainly don't have all the answers, so who am I to say "yay" or "nay" on this subject?

Erin, Dale and Sara are coming home for Christmas, so we are looking at how we can get some of the kitchen renovation materials that are currently sitting in the entry way and dining room out of the way as much as possible.  It's one thing for us to live "around" them, but they take up so much space that when you have company, they really decrease your amount of available space.  :(   Plus, we need to make a space to put up the Christmas tree!  :D

We are going to try to go ahead and put up the wall cabinets that will go on the opposite wall of the kitchen which will not only get them out of the entry way, but also provide us immediately with additional storage.  That's a good thing!  :)

In the meantime, today we attached the rest of the hardware to the cabinets that have already been installed since the end of May!  :)

I love the antiqued bronze pulls...they remind of of what you would find on a drawer in an old office, library, or hardware store!   :)

After installing the hardware, we went through the old drawer-full of plastic lids and pared it down to fit the current drawer, which is much smaller.  We had a lot of lids that had lost their containers, so we ended up throwing out about 1/2 of a garbage bagful of orphan plastic lids.  So now we have removed 3 more of the drawers that were sitting in the dining room...(1 drawer had the plastic lids but we had it sitting on top of two empty drawers so we wouldn't have to bend over as much to get things in and out of it.)

I did my coupon shopping today at Walgreen's and Rite Aid and got some very good deals for my money!  :)

At Walgreen's, I got $56.34 worth of product, paid $33.25 out-of-pocket, got $32.00 back in Register Rewards, so all of this only cost me $1.25!!  :)

I just finished reading "Laughing Without An Accent" by Firoozeh Dumas. 

 

 

I loved it!  Funny AND intelligent!  Now I want to read her memoir, Funny in Farsi!  

 

I was listening to "Into the Wild" by Jon Krakauer on my MP3 player.  

 

 

I listened to about 3/4's of it before I got bored with it.  It was interesting, but once I reached the part where I didn't feel there was going to be any new information (after all, we know from the start that Chris McCandless doesn't make it out of Alaska alive), I just decided not to finish it.  I have read several books by Jon Krakauer before and always read them till the end.  He does write about interesting subjects.  I'm not really sure why I got bored with this one.

Updates On Various Things In My Life...

Well, well, well...where to start...
There really is no "beginning" and "end" to this post...just little tidbits of things going on in my life right now...

Let's start with this one...

My niece is getting married in just under THREE WEEKS and while I was off of work this past week on a staycation, one of the things that was on my "to do" list was to go shopping for an outfit to wear to the wedding.  Most of my wardrobe is made up of casual clothes since I really don't go anywhere that requires more than that.  Plus, my weight has fluctuated so much over the last several years, that it seems like every season I have to buy a completely new wardrobe.  :(  Not good.  :(  I have the two dresses that I wore at my own kids' weddings, but they seem a little more "fancy" than I want to wear to this wedding.  And, besides, wearing a dress would require struggling with pantyhose and wearing heels...both of which I'm not sure my back could handle right now.  I was thinking more of black slacks with a nice blouse or blouse/jacket combo.

Yesterday, I was at Kohl's to return an item and decided to try on 2 blouses that I saw.  One looked great on me, except that I was between sizes in it...one size was too tight in the sleeves and the next size up looked like I was swimming in it.  :(  The second blouse looked good on the hanger, but terrible, with a capital "T" on me!  Ugh!!  

This morning the light bulb came on in my head that both the dresses that I had worn to my kids' weddings had dressy jackets with them!  I could pair one of the jackets with a white blouse and black pants.  However, after trying both jackets on, I decided that I didn't like the way they fit now.  :(  

BUT...and that is a very big BUT...I did spy a red rayon shirt/blouse in my closet that still fit.  Paired with a white, lacy shell and black pants that I already have and voila...I have me an outfit for the wedding!  AND at no additional cost!  Double win!  :)

Bring on the WEDDING!!!   This old lady is READY to par-tay!!!  :D


Next item up for discussion...
Have you ever thought about doing something, planned for it, dreamed of it, wanted it...only to be REALLY disappointed with the outcome when you finally did it? 

Ever wonder why I haven't yet posted pictures of the finished, bound and washed whole-cloth quilt even though it's been done for a few weeks now???  Well...I'm just really disappointed in what it looks like.

Yeah...that's it.

Since washing out the blue markings basically, it looks like one big blob of white.  :(  The center medallion doesn't show up AT ALL!  :(  I'm really disappointed in it.  I really should have done the quilting in a colored or variegated thread so the design would show up better.

I've been so disappointed in this quilt, that I haven't even put it on our bed to use.  I've had it folded up on a quilt rack with the BACK side showing.  

At least the back has something interesting to look at.  I really love the black and white toile fabric.

Anyway...so much for that quilt.  I spent 9 months hand quilting it only to be disappointed in the outcome.  However, I did learn a valuable lesson...I actually LIKE to see the stitching in my quilts!  In the past I have done everything I could to make my stitches virtually invisible.  But no more!  I want to see the stitching and the design!

Based on that nugget of information, I am using a variegated thread on my current quilt...and here are some close-ups of that stitching...

I'm really liking the way this quilt is turning out!  I loved the top before I started the hand quilting, and I'm REALLY liking the hand quilting on this one!  I hope the recipient loves it as much as I do!  :)   Also, because the stitching is not as dense as the whole-cloth quilt was, this one is moving right along!  :)  YAY!  I love it when it goes quickly! 


Okay...on to the next item of business...
Andy & I *did* get back to the kitchen renovation... at least a little bit this weekend.  We got some more beadboard paneling cut and ready to attach to the wall.  (It didn't actually get "attached" yet, but at least it is cut and ready!  LOL)  And we started putting the hardware on the cabinets that are already installed. 

Let me be perfectly clear here...this has been no easy feat!!!  It is a true pain in the you-know-where trying to get these pulls installed.  The drill bit that came with the positioning guide is too small...as is all the others we tried using.  Except for one...which is the right size, but chews up the wood horribly so we can't use it.  Instead, we have to use the next size smaller and work it around till, hopefully, we have made the hole large enough for the pulls, but not so big that they show around the pull.  :(   Why, oh why, can't ANYTHING be easy?

But...we have two attached so far, and hopefully, can get the last two pulls attached and then the knobs on the door fronts.  The knobs should go much easier since they don't sit down inside the wood like the pulls do.  Keep your fingers crossed for us on that one...LOL.

Labor Day Weekend...

Happy Labor Day to my USA readers...and Happy Birthday to my son Paul and his wife, Trinity! 

Yep...you read that right.  My son and daughter-in-law share the same birthday!  :)   Makes it real easy to remember!  LOL

The Labor Day weekend is a 3-day weekend here in the USA...the last hurrah of the summer.  We planned to have a yard sale all three days, but it looks like we might get rained out for Monday.  But so far, Saturday and Sunday have been fruitful and we have gotten rid of a lot of things.  YAY!!!  


This evening I decided to go through a closet that has been so overstuffed that the door wouldn't completely close.  :(  This closet is in my quilting room (used to be Erin's bedroom) and is where I store my out-of-season clothes.  Unfortunately, it also holds all the clothes that I can no longer wear due to weight fluctuations.  I know that it is not useful to hold onto clothes that I can no longer wear because even if I ever do lose the weight and get back into them, most likely they will no longer be fashionable.  :(
So...I decided to attack the closet today...

I ended up with 3 large garbage bags of clothes to donate to the local thrift store...

I emptied all of these hangers...

The door completely closes now!!!  YIPPEE!! 


This afternoon I also went and did my couponing at Walgreen's and Rite Aid.

Also, on Friday, I received a phone call regarding a "For Sale" sign that I had put up in my favorite quilt store.  Since moving up to my Hinterberg 3-roller floor quilt frame that Andy got me for my birthday last year, I decided to sell my Grace floor hoop.

A quilter had seen my "For Sale" sign and wanted to buy it!!  So on Saturday I drove over to the quilt store to meet the lady and make the sale.

While there I went in to chat with Janet, the quilt store owner who had let me put the sign up on her bulletin board and she asked me if I would please teach a hand quilting class in her shop.  We bantered some ideas back and forth for the class and I told her I would think about it and come up with something.  :)

I put a message out on a quilting forum I'm on and asked for advice from people who had taught hand quilting classes and who had taken them.  I have gotten some good responses as to what people want, etc.  So I will make a list of ideas and share them with Janet and see what we can come up with!  :)

I've had several items sell on Ebay this week which makes me very happy!  Things leaving my house!!  YAY!  I have more auctions ending this week and, so far, 2 of them have bids!  YAY again!  :)

Last night I trimmed the whole cloth quilt and sewed the binding on the front by machine.  Now I'm going to flip it to the back and hand sew it down...

Does it count if you drink 2% milk while eating M & M's??  Do they cancel each other out like it does when you drink a diet soda while eating dessert???  :D

I got $18.10 worth of product, paid $5.04 out-of-pocket, got $5.00 back in Register Rewards, making this trip a net cost of $.04!!!  If you are wondering about why I buy milk there...this is a classic example of knowing what things cost where.  I am always telling people that even though places like Walgreen's are frequently higher on their non-sale prices than other places like Walmart, you can't ASSUME that they are.  I have found that Walgreen's can be very competitive in their prices on certain things.  Broughton milk at Walmart is $3.69...Broughton milk at Walgreen's is $3.14!!!

At Rite Aid I got $24.36 worth of product, paid $3.93 out-of-pocket, got 8.99 back in Single Check Rebates and +Up Rewards, making this a $5.06 money-maker for me!  :)

Busy Weekend...

I wonder if Frank and Mike (American Pickers) are close cousins to Andy???

Andy is "a wheeler and a dealer".  He goes to auctions and yard sales and picks up things, mainly vintage/collectible glassware and antique crocks, to resell for a profit.  He usually does a large part of this selling at the yard sale that we have, usually every summer.

However, with us both working our tails off this summer, and the supposed kitchen remodel that we have going right now, the summer has kinda gotten away from us and it doesn't look he is going to have a free weekend for us to have our usual yard sale this year.

So...to clear some of the stuff out that would normally be sold at the yard sale...AND to make some money...Saturday was spent photographing things to list on Craigslist and Ebay.  I listed a lot of auctions yesterday as  well as a couple listings on CL.  One of the listings on CL was for a Fire King Egg Nog punch bowl and mugs, which sold this afternoon.

When the person was here buying it, he found two of Andy's crocks that he wanted, too.  :):):)   Andy made out BIG TIME on the crocks!  YAY!!!  

In addition, this person also buys scrap gold, so I pulled some broken chains, earrings that I had lost the mate to, etc., out of my jewelry box.  He checked them out, weighed them (he had his scale with him), and then paid me $450 for them.   I've been thinking about doing that for a while now...just had never taken the plunge, so to speak.  I wear very little jewelry...just my wedding ring, my "mother's" ring, my watch, earrings, and occasionally, a bracelet, so this seemed like a logical step to starting to clear out the jewelry boxes.

We also sold a set of Pfaltzgraff dishes on CL this afternoon!! 

It's been a lot of work doing all the photographing, listing, and packing of items, and we aren't done, yet, but it feels good to be getting rid of stuff and making $$$ at the same time!  :)

Also, I've finally convinced Andy to sell the F150 truck that we've had a for 6 years but that has mainly been sitting idly by because 1)  since we replaced our wood stove with a coal stove we don't have to haul fire wood anymore;  and 2)  we can't afford the gas to feed it!  So this evening, we will write up something to put in the truck window with info on it, and also will be writing up a listing for the local "Bulletin Board", which is a local "pennysaver" type newspaper.  We'll probably also list it on CL while we are at it.

In the midst of all of this wheelin' and dealin' this afternoon, I went over to Rite Aid and Walgreen's to do my couponing.

I can't believe how quickly this weekend has flown by!  :(  I had so many things that I wanted to get done, but sadly, I only got a few of them done.

I have been busily listing things on Ebay in an effort to get my sewing room back into a useable state.  I am still listing items that I got from the quilter's estate auction a few weeks ago.  There is so much that I want to list on Ebay, but it is time consuming and wears me down after photographing and writing up a few things, so I'm listing them a few things at a time when I have the time.

I also listed a piece of vintage Pyrex that Andy found this weekend for a STEAL!  

Isn't she gorgeous?  My research on the internet says this pattern was a promotional item from 1961!  She's 50 years old!!!  And not too bad for the wear, either!  :)  I've seen a lot of Pyrex in my day, but never this pattern of pine cones and pine needles.  You can find a lot of casserole dishes, but it's pretty rare to find the lid intact, too! 

There haven't been many sold on Ebay recently, but the last one did sell for $22.50.  So keep your fingers crossed for us!  :)


On a quilting note, I'm on the last "row" of quilting on the whole-cloth quilt and am hoping to finish it up in the next day or so.  I'll post pictures when it is completely done!  :)


On Friday, Erin and Dale closed escrow on their first house and have spent this weekend moving in!  I'm very excited for them and can't wait to see it when we visit in September!  :)
