Cottage Baskets Quilt DONE!!!

Quote for the Day:
"I’m writing my book in fifth person, so
every sentence starts out with:
'I heard from this guy who told somebody …' "
~Demetri Martin

I actually finished this quilt about 10 days ago but just didn't have time photograph it and write the blog post, so here it is now!

Back in 2011, Andy & I attended the estate auction of a quilter and I got a lot of fabric, kits, etc. In one of the totes were these blocks that were pieced but not joined into a top, yet.  Last November I pulled out the blocks and joined them into a top, loaded it into my hand-quilting frame and started quilting them with "big-stitch" quilting using 3 strands of embroidery floss.

Here is the finished quilt...

I had 2 blocks left over so I used one and hand-wrote the label info on it...

  1. So romantic, so beautiful! Your big stitching quilting is perfect for the shabby chic impression. Doesn't this remind you of Carrie Nelson's Miss Rosie quilts? Well, it is fabulous!

  2. It is beautiful, Loretta. You are the second person I know who uses embroidery floss to hand quilt. Have you used it before and, if so, has it held up well? Is it easy to stitch with, as in, do the strands separate or become uneven? I'm thinking of trying it but can't quite commit to it yet.

    Thanks!

    1. This is the first time I've done "big stitch" so it is the first time using embroidery thread. It did tend to separate and tangle a lot. The only reason I used it was because I couldn't find a place locally that sold Perle #8 and I didn't want to try to color match from someplace online. :( I think it should hold up well, though.
